Gastronomy is a way of belonging, a delicious way to practice French and understand local identity. In markets, caf\u00e9s, and sugar shacks, I learned expressions that aren't found in books: \u201cC'est l'fun!\u201d (\u201cIt's fun!\u201d), \u201cJ'ai une p'tite fringale\u201d (\u201cI'm a little hungry\u201d), \u201cFaut profiter du beau temps!\u201d (\u201cLet's enjoy the nice weather!\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>Between a bonjour and a miam, I understood that French is learned with the soul... and with the appetite.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Created in the 1950s, it has become a symbol of national pride. It's one of those dishes that, beyond the gastronomic debate, brings everyone together around the same phrase: \u201cShall we have some poutine?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where to try it:<br><br>\u2022 La Poule Mouill\u00e9e (Plateau Mont-Royal): a local favorite, with a Portuguese-Quebecois twist and queues that are well worth the wait.<br>\u2022 Fromagerie Victoria: it is said that the first poutine originated in Victoriaville, and Quebecers claim that this is where you can find one of the best.
